- Identify barriers to access of care that may be attributed to a lack of cultural competency
Module 1.2 - Developing CLAS
At the conclusion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Differentiate and balance fact-centered and attitude/skill-centered approaches to developing cultural competency
- Understand frameworks for developing cultural competency
Module 1.3 - Patient-Centered Care and Effective Communication
At the conclusion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Define patient-centered care
- Explain the importance of distinguishing between disease and illness
- Apply models of effective provider-patient communication
Course 2: Ensuring Communication and Language Assistance
Module 2.1 - Importance of Communication and Language Assistance
At the conclusion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Describe the importance of the role of language in patient-provider communications
- Identify the legal and policy requirements for providing communication and language assistance services
- Describe the business practice issues related to providing communication and language assistance, and indicate the costs of not doing so
Module 2.2 - Models to Provide Communication and Language Assistance Services
At the conclusion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Describe the components of effective interpersonal communication for individuals with limited English proficiency
- Describe the roles of an interpreter
- Identify effective language access services related to written materials
- List characteristics of qualified interpreters and translators
Module 2.3 - Working Effectively with an Interpreter
At the conclusion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Describe the components of the triadic interview process and roles to participants
- List the factors necessary for providers to work effectively with interpreters
Course 3: Engagement, Continuous Improvement, and Accountability
Module 3.1 - Organizational Assessment and Strategic Planning
At the conclusion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Describe at least two aspects of the office environment that support cultural competency
- Assess their organization, office, or clinic, including resources, interactions, materials, environment, and organizational strategies
- Describe strategic planning processes support cultural competency development
Module 3.2 - Assessing Your Community
At the conclusion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Describe the importance of data collection and analysis in the provision of culturally competent care
- Identify resources to collect, use, and manage data to create community and practice profiles and needs assessment
- Describe the challenges to data collection and ways to mitigate them
Module 3.3 - Building Community Partnerships
At the conclusion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Describe the importance of developing health-related partnerships with the community
- Identify at least two components of forming community health partnerships, and list at least three characteristics of successful community partnerships
- Describe the benefits of including minority community members in health partnerships
